Frequently Asked Question
How do I get set up for remote Pier Network access?
Last Updated 3 hours ago
Part one
To configure this... you'll need to do the following:- Go to https://login.tailscale.com/admin/machines
- After logging in, click on `Settings` across the top menu.
- At the bottom of the left menu, click `Keys`
- Click the `Generate auth key...` button to the right of the `Auth keys` header text.
- Give it a description if you'd like ( doesn't matter what it is, and it can be blank if you want. )
- Click `Generate key` blue button at the bottom
- Click the copy button ( looks like two squares nested together ) - on the right hand side of the key ( it starts with `tskey-auth-` )
- Paste that key via private message to me ( or if you prefer more security, through a new ticket at the Help Desk )
Part Two
Once I notify you that the remote access has been added, you'll need to perform the following steps to finalize the setup:- Head back to https://login.tailscale.com/admin/machines
- Click the 3 dots to the right of `tailscale-o#p#`
- Click `Disable Key Expiry`
- Click the same 3 dots once more
- Click `Edit routes settings...`
- Click the check box beside `192.168.##.0/24`
- Click the `Save` button
Tada! You're done!
Now, you can use your internal network IP to access your Web Power Switch to remotely power cycle your PC. You can also use the Computer IP as an emergency way to recover from software glitches in your normal remote access tool.
Note: Please don't use the `192.168.##.#` IP address for routine access to your pier side computer. This new remote access should only be used for remotely power cycling your PC or for emergency PC access if your normal remote access tools don't work properly.
How to use this new feature:
Prepare
- When connected to your Pier PC, please note the internal address of your Web Power Switch. This is usually something like 192.168.##.50.
- Also take note of your Windows PC's local IP address.
When you need it
- Power cycling your PC
- When you suspect your Windows PC has locked up and needs a reboot, use the Web Power Switch IP address in the browser of your Tailscale connected PC, Tablet or Phone ( again, usually something like 192.168.##.50 )
- Log in with your Web Power Switch credentials, and power cycle the PC like you would any other device.
- On your Tailscale connected PC, Tablet or Phone, open Microsoft Remote Desktop client.
- Enter in the IP address of your Windows PC ( usually something like 192.168.##.100 )
- Connect and authenticate with the same account credentials that you log into your Pier side PC with.
- Recover your normal remote access method ( Tailscale, RustDesk, AnyDesk, Splashtop, etc )
- Close your current Remote Desktop session
- Reconnect to your pier side PC with your usual remote access method.
